Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMKR) Growth Is Moving Beyond Phones

What happened

Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMKR) reported $1.99 billion of Q3 sales and a 18.3% gross margin.

The direct answer is that the business became less dependent on communications demand. Communications fell to 37% of sales from 51%, while computing and automotive shares both increased.

Why it matters

Non-communications markets supplied 63% of Q3 sales, up from 49% a year earlier. Subtracting the reported communications share from 100% produces a 14 percentage-point shift toward computing, automotive, industrial, and consumer demand.

Computing rose to 26% of sales from 19%. Automotive and industrial rose to 22% from 16%. Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMKR) also reduced top-ten customer concentration to 66% from 73%, another sign of a broader revenue base.

Consumer represented 15%, only one point higher year over year, so the mix shift was concentrated in computing and automotive.

Profitability improved even though total sales were nearly flat year over year. Gross margin expanded four percentage points, operating margin reached 11.3%, and diluted earnings per share increased to $0.76 from $0.51.

Management linked the margin improvement to favorable mix and factory utilization. Those gains can reverse if planned capacity arrives before demand or customer programs slip.

The strongest counterargument is that advanced-products sales still fell 3.1% to $1.63 billion. Q4 revenue guidance has a $1.95 billion midpoint, about 2.1% below Q3. A better end-market mix does not guarantee near-term growth.

Investment also adds balance-sheet risk. The company now expects about $2.5 billion of 2026 capital spending. Long-term debt and inventory were already higher at the end of Q2 than at year-end, reflecting the cost of expanding capacity.

What's next

The next test is whether computing and automotive demand lifts advanced-products sales while Q4 margin stays between 18% and 19%. Investors should also watch utilization, inventory, debt, capital spending, and customer advances.

End-market percentages are management classifications and do not disclose profit by market. The mix calculation shows diversification in revenue, not whether every category earns comparable returns or has the same cycle risk.
