Where the provision rise comes from
Loss provisions grew far faster than revenue. The provision for finance receivable losses was $615 million, up 26.0% in OptimistFi's calculation from $488 million a year earlier.
The provision has two parts. Net charge-offs were $469 million, against $427 million a year earlier. The allowance for finance receivable losses rose $146 million, which the release attributes to receivables growth. A year earlier it rose $61 million. OptimistFi calculates that the larger reserve build accounts for $85 million of the $127 million rise in the provision.
Management says it runs the business on capital generation. That measure leaves out the change in the allowance but still counts net charge-offs. It was $284 million, up from $272 million, a 4.4% gain in OptimistFi's calculation. The release says receivables growth drove the increase, partly offset by higher net charge-offs.

Credit and funding at Sept. 30
Credit ratios were mixed. The net charge-off ratio on consumer loans was 6.89% in the quarter. That is up from 6.67% a year earlier but down from 7.77% in the second quarter. The 30+ day delinquency ratio was 5.34% at Sept. 30, below 5.55% a year earlier and above 5.17% at June 30.
Funding costs rose with the loan book. Interest expense was $345 million, up 8% from $320 million, because of more average debt and a higher average cost of funds. Principal debt outstanding was $24.4 billion, 52% of it secured. Net leverage, measured as net adjusted debt to adjusted capital, was 5.5x, unchanged from a year earlier.
OneMain held $936 million of cash and cash equivalents, of which $268 million is unavailable for general corporate purposes. It also reported $1.0 billion of undrawn capacity on its unsecured corporate revolver, $6.5 billion of undrawn conduit and credit card funding facilities, and $12.3 billion of unencumbered receivables.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that OneMain's branch and digital reach turns a large nonprime market into steady origination volume, as long as credit performance and funding access hold. Origination growth and the funding cushion fit that view. Earnings do not yet.
The Consumer and Insurance segment fell harder than the consolidated results. It reports on a non-GAAP basis that leaves out items such as restructuring charges and debt repurchase losses. Its adjusted net income was $174 million against $227 million, a 23.3% drop in OptimistFi's calculation. Adjusted earnings per share were $1.51 against $1.90.
Return on assets slipped to 2.6% from 3.0% a year earlier. That bears on the above-market returns in OptimistFi's case. The release's own risk list names the sufficiency of the allowance for finance receivable losses and continued access to the capital markets. Growth supports the case, while the heavier provision and lower returns keep it from strengthening.
What's next
The next test is OneMain's report on fourth-quarter 2026 results. A provision that grows no faster than receivables and a consumer loan net charge-off ratio at or below this quarter's level would support the case. Another reserve build that outruns receivables growth, or rising delinquencies, would weaken it.
