Hexcel Corporation (NYSE: HXL) Doubles Free Cash Flow

What happened

Hexcel Corporation (NYSE: HXL) more than doubled nine-month free cash flow as commercial aerospace growth outweighed weaker defense and space demand.

Free cash flow reached $102.5 million through September, up 105% from $49.9 million. Third-quarter sales rose 8.8% to $496.4 million, and adjusted earnings increased 35% to $0.50 per share.

The company supplies lightweight composite materials used in aircraft structures, engines and other high-performance applications. Its economics depend heavily on customer production rates, mix and manufacturing efficiency. Commercial aerospace represented 66.5% of quarterly sales, up from 60.1% a year earlier.

Why it matters

Commercial aerospace sales grew 20.5% to $330.3 million, while defense, space and other sales fell 8.7% to $166.1 million. That creates a 29.2-percentage-point growth gap between the two markets.

The mix still improved profitability. Adjusted operating margin rose to 11.0% from 9.8%, and gross margin expanded to 23.3% from 21.9%. Those changes support the view that higher commercial aircraft volumes can carry more profit through the factory network.

Cash generation also strengthened. The $52.6 million increase in nine-month free cash flow gives Hexcel Corporation (NYSE: HXL) more room to reduce debt, repurchase shares or fund capacity without relying as heavily on external capital. The board also increased its share-repurchase authorization to $750 million, so buybacks now compete with debt reduction and capacity investment.

The countercase is concentration. Defense and space weakness, customer production delays or inventory changes can offset commercial gains. Management kept full-year sales and adjusted earnings guidance unchanged rather than raising it.

What's next

Watch fourth-quarter commercial aerospace sales, adjusted operating margin and working capital. Continued margin expansion alongside cash conversion would show that higher production volumes are improving unit economics. Full-year adjusted earnings guidance remains $2.30 to $2.40 per share, and free cash flow guidance remains above $195 million.

Also track defense and space orders and net debt. Long-term debt was $934.9 million at September 30, down from $993.0 million at year-end, while cash was $77.8 million.

The quarter improves the commercial recovery case. It does not eliminate customer concentration, production-rate or end-market mix risk.
