Where the growth came from
Healthcare, the largest segment, grew revenue 9% to $1.1 billion. Service and consumables revenue each rose 10%. Capital equipment rose 4%. Operating income was $269.2 million, up from $259.5 million.
Life Sciences grew fastest. Revenue rose 18% to $170.6 million from $145.0 million, led by a 53% jump in capital equipment revenue. Operating income climbed to $75.8 million from $59.9 million. CEO Dan Carestio said the quarter gave STERIS confidence to raise its full-year expectations for the segment. Organic growth is now expected at 9-10% in constant currency, up from 6-7%.
Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) went the other way on guidance. Revenue rose 5% to $295.6 million from $281.5 million. How tariff refunds and restructuring shape the numbers
Part of the quarter's profit came from tariff refunds. STERIS put the pre-tax benefit to as reported results at $20 million. Gross tariff costs were flat with the prior year at $15 million.
The segment table says corporate costs include the refunds. Corporate's operating loss narrowed to $86.7 million from $109.9 million. The revised outlook includes $0.18 per share of refunds received year-to-date. The adjusted EPS range moved up $0.25 at both ends.
The new restructuring plan covers facility realignment, product rationalization and some organizational changes, mainly in Healthcare. It is separate from the plan announced Aug. 5. STERIS expects total charges of $45 million, including $10 million in cash. Of the charges, $25 million fell in the second quarter. Annualized savings are expected to reach $9 million, with some realized in fiscal 2028.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that STERIS compounds value if infection prevention stays a regulation-driven healthcare need and scale turns that demand into cash. The quarter backs the demand half. The cash half is mixed.
By OptimistFi's calculation, recurring consumables and service revenue grew 8.7% to $1.27 billion and made up 79.8% of total revenue, against 79.9% a year earlier. Recurring work is growing in step with the whole company.
Profit growth looks less even. OptimistFi calculates that adjusted income from operations rose 15.8% to $390.5 million. Combined operating income at Healthcare, AST and Life Sciences rose 6.7% to $477.1 million. Total reported revenue growth was 8.8%. The gap sits in corporate costs, which include the tariff refunds.
Cash is the weaker spot. Operating cash flow for the first six months was $656.1 million, down from $707.8 million. Free cash flow was $492.5 million, down from $527.7 million. The release ties the decline mainly to a much lower working capital contribution, partly offset by higher net income.
STERIS still returned cash. It repurchased $215.9 million of shares in the six months, up from $111.1 million a year earlier. It also paid $128.4 million in dividends.
What's next
STERIS management hosts a conference call on Nov. 5 at 9:00 a.m. ET. After the proposed Xodus Medical acquisition closes, the company will give a revised fiscal 2027 outlook that includes it. The release warns that regulatory approvals may not come, or may take longer than expected.
The outlook table shows fiscal 2027 free cash flow of $800.0 million. A rebound toward that figure would back the cash-conversion half of the case. Another lower working capital contribution would weaken it. STERIS also expects to stop disclosing backlog beginning in fiscal 2028. It calls backlog a less meaningful indicator of future revenue trends.
