AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) Core EPS climbs 14% and full-year guidance holds

What happened

AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE: AZN) reported nine-month total revenue of $46.88 billion, up 7% at constant exchange rates, and kept its full-year guidance.

Core EPS rose 14% to $8.00, and Core operating profit grew at the same rate. Third-quarter total revenue of $16.21 billion also grew 7%.

The drugmaker said it completed a $2.0 billion equity investment in Summit Therapeutics Inc. on Oct. 5, paid in full at closing. The stake gives AstraZeneca rights equal to about 12.0% of Summit's common stock, or about 10.6% on a fully diluted basis.

The two companies will also test sonesitatug vedotin with Summit's PD-1/VEGF bispecific antibody ivonescimab.

For the full year, AstraZeneca expects total revenue to rise by a mid-to-high single-digit percentage and Core EPS by a low double-digit percentage, both at constant exchange rates.

Why it matters

Growth in three therapy areas is outrunning the drugs losing exclusivity. At constant exchange rates, nine-month Oncology revenue rose 16%, respiratory and immunology 10% and rare disease 11%. Farxiga product revenue fell 15% and Brilinta 62%.

By OptimistFi's calculation, Enhertu combined sales rose 30.8% in the first nine months, to $4.68 billion from $3.58 billion a year earlier. The figure adds sales recorded by Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca.

The results fit OptimistFi's view that AstraZeneca works when clinical differentiation turns into high-margin global revenue faster than patent, payer and pipeline risks erode it. Third-quarter gross margin was 82%, up 1 percentage point at constant exchange rates.

The filing also shows setbacks. Volrustomig was discontinued for futility in a first-line lung cancer trial. An Ultomiris trial in delayed graft function was discontinued for lack of efficacy. Etcamah missed its main goal in the SERENA-4 breast cancer trial.

What's next

AstraZeneca plans to publish fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on Feb. 9, 2027. Results inside the guided ranges for revenue and Core EPS would support the case. A shortfall would weaken it.

Its Reshaping for Sustainable Growth programme is expected to cost up to $2.0 billion in one-time restructuring costs and deliver $1.5 billion in annualised pre-tax run-rate benefits. AstraZeneca expects the work to be essentially complete by the end of 2029.
