Why it matters

The quarter supports OptimistFi's case that scale and branch reach can keep availability, utilization and pricing ahead of smaller rivals through the cycle. Rental revenue increased 17.8% year over year, net income rose 31.2%, and adjusted EBITDA climbed 19.8%. General rentals segment rental revenue rose 8.8% to a quarterly record of $2.61 billion, while rental gross margin widened 170 basis points to 38.4%.

Specialty rentals segment rental revenue increased 34.7% to a quarterly record of $1.7 billion, and rental gross margin widened 250 basis points to 47.6%. OptimistFi's calculation puts the midpoint of total revenue guidance up $0.45 billion to $18.1 billion and the midpoint of adjusted EBITDA guidance up $0.30 billion to $8.35 billion.

The nine-month figures include a $53 million pre-tax gain from the sale of part of the scaffolding business. The filing says forward-looking reconciliations for adjusted EBITDA are unavailable without unreasonable effort, and it lists cyclical, pricing, demand and macro risks.

What's next

United Rentals will hold a conference call tomorrow, Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Investors will watch whether management confirms the higher outlook with continued growth, margin expansion and cash generation. The company says it expects to complete $1.5 billion of share repurchases in 2026, and it declared a quarterly dividend of $1.97 per share payable on November 25, 2026. A weaker update would show softer demand, weaker pricing or a shortfall against the raised ranges.
