What happened
Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ: BSRR) said its board approved a new share repurchase program for up to 1,000,000 shares of common stock. The authorization starts after the current program expires on October 31, 2026 and runs until October 31, 2027. The company said 381,532 shares remain available under the current program. The new plan replaces the October 23, 2025 program for 1,000,000 shares.
The company said shares may be repurchased in open-market or privately negotiated transactions. Management may also enter into a 10b5-1 plan with a nationally recognized broker-dealer. The board also declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.27 per share, payable November 9, 2026, to shareholders of record on November 2, 2026. The board said it approved the dividend after reviewing financial performance and capital for the quarter ended September 30, 2026.

Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that Sierra Bancorp is a relationship-bank compounder only if its Porterville-centered California franchise keeps funding loans cheaply and underwriting credit cleanly through the rate and local-credit cycle. The board said it approved the dividend after reviewing financial performance and capital for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. The buyback and dividend fit that view because the filing shows continued capital return and ties the payout to recent performance and capital.
By OptimistFi's calculation, the 381,532 shares still available under the current program equal about 38.15% of the new 1,000,000-share authorization. The new authorization is a meaningful capital-return step, but it is still only an authorization until the company buys shares. The filing also extends the dividend streak to 111 consecutive quarters. That supports the board's capital-return message. The main caution is that repurchases depend on price, trading volume, corporate and regulatory requirements, and market conditions.

What's next
The next dated event is the dividend payment on November 9, 2026, with shareholders of record as of November 2, 2026. The current buyback program expires on October 31, 2026, and the new authorization can begin after that date.
If Sierra Bancorp starts repurchases under the new plan, the capital-return case strengthens. If the company leaves the authorization unused, investors will rely mainly on the dividend. The next check is whether the company starts buying shares once the current program expires.
