Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that Orchid Island works only if management can turn mortgage-spread opportunities into cash earnings while protecting book value through rate and funding cycles. These preliminary results weaken that case because book value per share was $1.20 lower than on June 30, 2026, and estimated total return on equity was (12.5)% .
The $0.90 per-share GAAP loss was three times the $0.30 per share of dividends declared during the quarter. That matters for a company built around monthly cash distributions. The filing says REIT taxable income is a better indication of dividend-paying income than net income, and the figures are preliminary and subject to review.
The company also said the market value of two short Treasury futures positions was $894.7 million and $588.0 million for 10-Year Treasury futures and 10-Year Ultra Treasury futures.

What's next
The next common stock dividend announcement is expected on November 10, 2026. The October dividend already has a November 27, 2026 payment date and an October 30, 2026 record date. A higher book value per share in the next release, or a smaller quarterly loss, would strengthen the case. More book-value pressure would weaken it.
