If reports making waves online are anything to go by, the Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) messaging app, WhatsApp, is planning to unleash a video calling feature on the beta version of the app. According to Android Police, the feature has already been spotted on the app’s beta version for Android, iOS, and Windows phone.
Roll Out In Stages
However, it appears WhatsApp and Facebook are not planning to launch the new feature to all devices, at once. The roll out according to sources will be in stages targeting a small number of people as the two continue to carry out tests on it.
Rolling out a feature in stages is not something new as most of the time it allows developers to fix any underlying issues as well as bugs in a bid of making an app efficient. In the case of the video call feature on WhatsApp, people who receive it at start will not be able to call all their friends given that not all of them will have it. As it stands, a video call will only go through on both parties having the beta version of the app.
This is not that first time that WhatsApp has tried to push the video call feature into people’s devices. In May, some people reported seeing the function, but at the time, it did not work. Any roll out going forward should signal that Facebook is confident the feature will work without any hitches.
Fending Off Competition
It does not come as a surprise that WhatsApp is increasingly coming up with new feature even on reaching the 1 billion mark on active users. Rising to the top is always the easy part, but remaining there for long is always the big challenge in a world where innovation is the order of the day.
A video chat capability is now expected to take WhatsApp capabilities to new heights making it easy for it to compete with other apps with similar functions. The function could especially allow Facebook to rival Snapchat, which has been making waves with its Snapchat stories function.
Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) stock shed $0.99 in market value to close Tuesday trading session at a low of $132.29 a share.
